How to Determine Wheel Interchangeability?
1. Wheel Size
The first thing you need to check in a wheel is its size.
While we’ll discuss the exact wheel size for each Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle in detail later, you just need to remember (for now) that these vehicles come with 17-inch, 18-inch, or 20-inch wheels – depending on the trim level.
2. Bolt Pattern
Next is the bolt pattern. This is the diameter of the imaginary circle formed about the lug holes around the center of the wheel.
If you’ve read our article on the Jeep Grand Cherokee bolt pattern, you’ll know models from 1993 to 1998 have the 5×4.5 (or 5×114.3) bolt pattern. Similarly, the models from 1998 to present have the 5×5 (or 5×127) bolt pattern.
When interchanging the wheels, it’s important to have a compatible bolt pattern for proper fitment.
Otherwise, the wheels won’t securely attach to the vehicle’s hub.
3. Load Rating
A wheel’s load rating indicates how much weight it can handle before any structural damage. You need to ensure that your wheels’ load rating is equal to that of your stock wheels.
Usually, you can get this info from the owner’s manual. But you can also check tires’ load ratings to get a rough idea if you can’t find the owner’s manual.
For example, if you have 275/40ZR17 102W tires, the last number (102) refers to the tire’s load rating. By checking this value in the load index table, you’ll know that a 102-load rating means a tire can handle 1874 lbs of weight without any issue.

4. Centre Bore
Centre bore is an often-undervalued spec that people should consider when interchanging wheels. Simply put, it’s the diameter of the hole in the center of the wheel. For the Jeep Grand Cherokee, this hole is 71.5mm.
Therefore, you have to ensure that the new wheels’ center bore is equal to or greater than 71.5mm.
5. Offset
Offset is the distance between the mounting hub of a wheel and its centreline. You get a zero-offset wheel if the mounting hub is perfectly aligned with the centreline.
On the other hand, if the mounting hub is close to the outer side of the wheel, you get a positive-offset wheel that’s pushed inside the wheel well. These wheels are more likely to be interchangeable between vehicles,

6. Backspacing
This is the distance between the back edge of the wheel and its mounting surface.
